When I first started providing business coaching services, I followed the time for money model that all coaches at that time were trained to use. I charged a monthly fee for two hours of time with me every month.

That worked well while I was in start-up mode. But, it stopped working so well when I reached a full practice. I ran out of the time and energy I needed to add more new clients and additional income. I started to realize there was a cap on my profits.

I could see only three options: either work harder and longer hours to increase my income, or raise my rates, or settle for a less than satisfactory income level.

I chose to raise my rates. I was too timid to go back to my current clients and tell them I wanted more money, so I just increased my fee for new clients. That worked all right for quite a while, and I was content with a decent hourly rate and a full roster of clients.

It wasn’t until I started learning about different business models that I realized I had been in my own little world of not knowing there were other options for me to have a much more profitable business.

It wasn’t until I implemented a new business model and leveraging strategies that I was able to bring in the kind of income I wanted to make. The knowledge of new business models and ways to leverage my time and energy was the foundation for my being able to even imagine making six figures or more.

I made the shift from professional practitioner to business owner first by branching out into multiple streams of income – such as group coaching programs, workshops, training and speaking, and then creating a line of information products. Over time, I discovered additional leveraging models, such as the membership or association model.

Now I know that there are many ways to structure your business so you can move away from trading all your time for money and enjoy much more income and freedom in your business. If you’re not bringing in the kind of money you want, your business model and service delivery systems are the first places to look.

The business models and systems ideas are almost endless so you can attract more clients and make more money without working so hard. I teach those newer models to all my clients. I love showing women how to shift away from trading all their time for money and implementing systems to leverage what they know into multiple streams of income.

Is your business model set up so you can bring in more money with less effort? If not, here’s what to do. First, look for ways you could deliver your services to multiple people at one time. Or, consider raising your rates by packaging your service delivery in different ways that provide more value without taking more of your time. Or, if you have a proven program or signature system, licensing or selling your home-study system might be another option for you to consider to increase your income to the level you want.

Think out of the box with creative, innovative ways to deliver and leverage your existing services, and watch your income start to soar!

I was teaching a marketing class recently to a group of coaches and consultants and said to the participants that you need to do just three things to grow your business: specialize, simplify and systematize.

Here are my tips on these three steps that you can implement right away in your business to increase your profits while working fewer hours.

Step 1: Specialize

People look for the best in a field when they need advice and solutions. If you strive to be the best you can be in your area of specialty, so you’ll stand out as the top service provider in your marketplace.

Get clear on what your greatest passions, strengths and expertise are, and build your business around that. Know what makes you different from your competitors and leverage that uniqueness. Developing a specialty based on both your expertise and unique personality will give you a very distinctive professional brand.

Offer unique solutions to solve the problems and frustrations of a smaller section of your target audience so that you will be seen as a specialist and not a generalist. Go deep instead of broad. You’ll be easily referable and you’ll be able to charge much higher fees.

To build a highly successful, highly profitable business, you must be an expert at what you do. You need to choose one market, focus on it, and grow it as big as you can.

Step 2: Simplify

Too many women are overwhelmed with all the actions they are taking to grow their business. They are making it much more complicated than it needs to be because they aren’t following a simple model.

You need to simplify and streamline your business so you can work fewer hours, have more freedom, and make more money. My motto is simplicity plus prosperity – I want them both.

Focus on those activities that will produce profit to grow your business and income. The most important activities in your business are marketing, sales, client service delivery, and new product and service development. Simplify your actions so that you’re devoting most of your time to attracting new business and delivering your specialized services, and delegate the rest.

Step 3: Systematize

When you’re just starting out and you have only a few clients, running your business is easy. Once you reach expert status though and have a full slate of clients, live events, information products and joint ventures, you get too busy to handle it all.

This is when you need to automate and systematize many of your business functions so that you are able to focus on your core strength. Lead generation, follow-up, product delivery, payment and registration can be entirely automated, freeing you up to do more high level work.

You can develop simple systems for everything in your business – email, client support, publishing ezines, articles and blog posts, posting to social media sites, managing your schedule, and processing payments to name a few.

Creating systems and automating will help you simplify and streamline your business so you can work fewer hours and make more money. Systematizing your business will give you much more income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take action on any one of these ideas on specializing, simplifying and systematizing and I can guarantee that your income and feeling of fulfillment in your business will increase dramatically.

I spoke at a women’s networking and event last week in Toronto in my old neighborhood of the Beach on adding information products as a new revenue stream for professional service providers. I love connecting with women and supporting them in learning and implementing new ideas to grow their business.

Internet marketing comes naturally to me as I’ve been doing it for so long. I like to break it down into simple, doable steps to make it easy for women to implement. I teach them step-by-step how to create new profit centers in their business.

My business changed dramatically when I added
new revenue streams and information products.

. . . my marketing became easier

. . . my income increased

. . . I made more sales when I went out to speak

I’d like to share with you some of the ideas I shared at my talk
on how you can get started with information products.

1) Find an unmet need and fill an existing demand.
You’ll have your best success selling information products by finding an unfilled need in your current marketplace and creating a product or program to meet that existing demand. It’s almost impossible to create demand that doesn’t already exist, but you can do very well providing the solutions, resources and answers that people are already searching for.

2) Repurpose everything you do.
You don’t have to start from scratch when creating a new information product. You more than likely have something on your computer from an article, a talk or a workshop that you could use and repurpose. For example, turn a series of articles into an ebook, record the ebook as an audio program, or package your seminar into a workbook you can sell. The ideas are endless.

3) Enroll support and assistance to complete your projects.
You need support and assistance to complete your projects. Don’t try to do it all alone. Keep your first project simple, and don’t get bogged down trying to learn new technology. If anything feels too technical, pick up the phone or send an email to someone you know who has already done this. Or, join a coaching program or hire a virtual assistant to get you set up and started quickly. There are many very reasonably priced services and programs available. This will give you momentum to complete your projects so you can start making sales sooner.

You can easily add a new profit center to your business by turning what you know into an information product, coaching program or seminar. This will make your marketing much easier, increase your sales, and have clients calling you instead of you having to chase after them.

There has never been better time to write an eBook.

Ebooks and other “How-To” Manuals are the hottest thing selling on the internet right now. There is a phenomenal global potential to distribute information products using the Internet.

Writing about what you know and publishing it in eBooks is one of the most effective ways to grow your professional service business. Publishing information products can help you become a recognized authority in your area of expertise as well as substantially increase your income.

Writing an eBook or other information product will help you to:

• market and grow your business
• focus your energy and business efforts
• develop a strong reputation
• establish yourself as a recognized expert in your field
• stand out in a crowded marketplace
• attract traffic to your web site
• gain you new clients with less effort
• get you noticed by the media
• expand your business globally
• command much higher fees
• earn passive income

With all those advantages, writing an eBook or information product would seem like a great thing to do. And it is.

Here are some tips to get you off to great start:

• Choose a Subject for Your eBook or How-To Manual
• Research the needs of your target market
• Get feedback from your current clients and customers
• Decide on a topic and research it well
• Get clear on the benefits of your solution for your target audience

Create an Outline
An outline is a roadmap for the subjects you plan to cover as you write – the steps to the solution you have for the problem your target market has.

• Brainstorm ideas about everything you want to share on your subject.
• Write ten points you want your readers to know about your topic.
• Define the problem your target market has, and the solutions you have for each of their specific challenges. This becomes the outline for your book.
• Transfer this list to a table of contents.
• Expand on each point.
• Create a new directory folder on your computer for your eBook project.

Define Your Book Topic
Define your book topic in a one or two sentence description to bring your entire project into focus. Define the core of your message and build everything around that. Create a ‘book hook’ to position yourself as an expert.

Guidelines for Focused Productivity While Writing Your eBook
You will have to have to commit a certain amount of time and take focused, consistent action to achieve results.

• Set an intention and make the commitment to make this project your number one priority
• Focus your writing time: commit to writing in large blocks of time, or at least 2 hours a day, or 3 to 5 pages a day.
• Begin each day with your number one priority – writing your eBook.
• Enroll the support of a writing partner, a group, or a coach.
• You Can Position Yourself As An Expert by Writing An eBook

One of the great advantages of creating a product is that you can position yourself as an expert or specialist in your field by writing an eBook, workbook or program for your niche market.

As an expert, you will be able to charge much higher fees for your services because specialized knowledge and services are much more highly valued than general information.

Positioning yourself as the go-to person in your field is a smart marketing strategy. It takes work, a good plan, and support to achieve expert status, but it’s well worth the effort to take this approach as part of your long-term business development strategy.

The media will call you, associations will ask you to speak at their events, and you will start to stand out, get noticed, and get hired.

Take action today to commit your words to paper – or computer. Start by believing in your own expertise. Then, step-by-step start to position yourself as a credible authority by writing ebooks and other information products. Over time, you can declare expert status.

I’m still enjoying my visit to the west coast of Canada. The Olympics are starting here in a few days, so there’s lots of excitement in the air. I’m getting quite a bit of writing done on my new book and home study program that I’ll be releasing in the next month or two – along with some brand new coaching programs. It’s great to be away from home for a while so I can relax and be in a place where my creativity and focus can flourish.

You’ve heard me say that you need a niche and an expertise in order to grow your business to the next level as well as make your marketing much easier. One of my clients recently told me she felt hesitant to say she was an expert.

Are you one of the many talented women who has so much wisdom and experience to offer, yet lacks the clarity or the inclination to declare expert status? Or, do you have so many interests and abilities that you struggle to simplify your offer and stand out for your specialty?

If so, here’s a simple exercise to narrow down what you’re good at and position yourself to become well known for your expertise. Write your answers to the following three statements:

• Something I’m really passionate about that I like to read and talk about a lot is . . .
• My favorite issues or situations I like to work on with clients are . . .
• If I was asked to speak to a group next week for an hour, the subject I know so well that I could speak about easily with little preparation is . . .

Your answers will give you an indication of your passion, talents and expertise and the specific way you like to help your clients.

Being an expert doesn’t mean you need to have degrees and certifications. That’s the old-style of expert. It just means you really know your stuff and care about sharing what you know with other people to improve their lives.

Get started writing, speaking and reading about what you know and love and you can develop authority status easily in less than a year. This will give you confidence and will give people a way to get to know you and decide to work with you without you having to work so hard to attract more clients.

Just share your passion and wisdom everywhere you go and people will be attracted naturally to you and your message.

I flew out to the West Coast of Canada this week to beautiful city called Victoria for a month’s escape from the snow and cold of Toronto. Victoria has a very moderate climate where it doesn’t snow. I lived here for a few years several years ago. I love walking by the ocean every day. It really inspires my imagination and creativity, so I plan to get lots more writing done on my new book and home study program while I’m here.

I have designed my business so that I can travel when and where I want and work when and where I want. My business is entirely automated and much of what I do is over to the internet and the phone. The days I am consulting or masterminding in person with clients or speaking or training, I can plan in advance around the time I will be away – which I always schedule in first – so my time is very flexible.

Why am I telling you this?

Because I want to give you some tips on how you can design your business to give you all the freedom, lifestyle and income you really want.

Here are the steps I took that you can take too:

First, if your only method of delivering your service is one person at a time and requires you to be present, think of ways you can shift some of your services so you can deliver them to more than one person at a time – for example, a small group or a workshop – or ways you could deliver your information in a packaged format.

Next, design a group program or a workshop, or create an information product. Or, do it all at the same time like I do. Start a group program and use that structure to create your first information product that you can sell online.

Then, automate many of the functions in your business using some of the low cost internet tools available that save you lots of time. You can automate things like client attraction, your ezine sign up, your special report or ebook delivery, follow-up messages, and online sales.

Because of the way I have set up my business, I make sales of my products and programs even when I’m on a plane or visiting a different city. It’s a great feeling to turn on your computer in the morning and see the sales notifier pop up to say you have made a sale – like I did this morning – even when you’re doing something else you enjoy.

These are some simple changes you can make to get you started. It’s about shifting your thinking about how you can grow your business and income, and then changing some of your delivery formats and methods.
