I hope you had as wonderful a holiday season as I did. I had lots of family time, parties, movies, lunches and great conversations. But, the one thing I always like about holiday time is having some down time; some quiet time to myself to think and dream and reflect on how I want year ahead to be.

Something I did last week that I do several times each year is to clear the clutter to make way for new. I do this whenever I want to attract new clients or create a new program.

One weekend, I cleared files and clutter in my office and created space for new clients, and by Wednesday I had three new clients without actively doing any marketing. The work you do internally is reflected externally in your results.
(< == This is not my office!)

I give this as an assignment to new coaching clients when I start working with them. You'd be amazed at how your energy changes and what new opportunities - and new clients - can show up when you get rid of the old and create space for the new.

Here's what I did that you can do too to make space for new clients and new opportunities to show up:

Typically, at the start of a new year, many of us feel the urge to set new goals. The slate feels as if it has been wiped clean with the sweep of the clock into a new year, and we are inspired to imagine we can accomplish great things.

This year, why not try a new way of ‘going goalless’. Focus on who you are becoming rather than any tangible, specific goals. Make a plan to develop qualities of your SELF that will shift you into a new space and direction in your life and your business.

I gave a seminar last week with my colleague Carolyn Ellis at the Verity Club – an upscale women’s club in Toronto. Our topic was “The 5 Key Secrets Every Woman Entrepreneur Needs to Know to Accelerate Business Growth and Thrive in This Changing Economy”.

Carolyn and I each shared our tips on how to leverage your brilliance and the mindset shifts and skills you need to make to really thrive in business today.

We talked about the need for real authenticity and integrity in business today. Old style business models are no longer working. The new approach is more toward being of service rather than selling. Be more interested in how you can help and serve your clients than in what you want to get from them.

A wonderful group of women gathered for the event. We got great feedback on several exercises we took them through.

We plan to do more in 2010 – including a 2 day mastermind coaching intensive in January.

Find out more here about the Brilliance Mastermind Coaching Intensive for Women Entrepreneurs and Independent Professionals taking place January 22 & 23, 2010 in Toronto.

Mindset for Money: Discovering How the Authentic YOU Can Attract All the Clients and Money You Will Ever Need – recap of teleseminar interview with Suzanne Evans.

I interviewed Suzanne Evans for my members last night. Suzanne is a marketing and mindset coach for helping professionals. Here is a summary of some of the key points she covered on the call.

To determine your target market, Suzanne suggests asking the question: “Who needs me most?” Make a decision about who your ideal prospects will be. Do you have a connection? Will you enjoy working with them? Do they have money to spend?

She talked about ‘Empathy Marketing” which comes from the place of “I get where you are; I’ve been there myself. I’ve made the same mistakes.” Her message is all about marketing yourself authentically. Don’t hide your flaws – celebrate them! Be the real you mistakes and all. Share your journey. Be vulnerable. People will relate to you. “Make your mess your message” is her motto. Be out there constantly sharing your message.

Suzanne believes that marketing is a moral obligation. You have a gift to help people. To not market is selfish. You’re keeping solutions from people. It’s okay to have 3 or 4 marketing strategies when you’re starting out, but you want to eventually get up to 18 to 20 strategies going on. Of course, some can be automated. Until your business is at 75% full, you should be marketing 3 to 5 hours a day.

Learn how to move from selling to sharing. You don’t have to sell. Share what you have. Consistently share your gifts. Give the best of what you have. Say: “Here’s what I can do to help you.”

You can make sales even in this down market. Survey your list to find out what they want and need. Call them up or take them for coffee. Find out their challenges and determine what new solutions you could offer. Offer options at different price points. Get rid of things that aren’t working.

Other tips Suzanne shared were: find support early on; eliminate half of your to do list; focus on revenue producing activities.

I answered this question about the strategies that have helped me grow my business in a LinkedIn group today. I thought I would post my reply here.

These are five strategies that have helped me focus my time and energy on business growth:

1) Planning my day in advance. I plan the day before and list the top three things I want to accomplish the next day. That way, I know what to start with.

2) Starting each day with my #1 priority. Doing that helps me get the important things done and give me energy for the day.

3) Time blocking. I carve out blocks of time in my calendar for projects and writing. I keep those time commitments to myself. I get a lot more accomplished that way.

4) Limiting time on email and social media. I only check and reply to email twice a day so I don’t have constant interruptions when I’m trying to focus. I log onto social media sites once a day and limit my time to fifteen minutes at most.

5) Setting aside one day each week for marketing and business development activities. I focus on active strategies where I actually connect with people and get my name in front of them – such as networking and phone calls, or writing an article to submit to an article directory – rather than passive strategies – such as working on my website or a brochure.

What strategies have helped you grow your business? I’d love to hear!
