I regularly lead a lot of teleclasses and group coaching programs for coaches, consultants and other professional women. One of my recent participants said:

“I’m tired of playing small. It’s not satisfying me or paying my bills. I’m not making enough money in this work which I love.”

I’ve been hearing this a lot lately. Women who love their work and want to make a bigger difference…who have a purpose and a message and want to take it bigger. . . . who are ready to get out there and connect with more people and not be so isolated in their home office.

I see many women ready to reinvent themselves and their business and get there voice out into the world in a bigger way.

These are the 3 key shifts I see many women need to make to take their message and their income to higher levels:

1. Shift into a more leveraged, specialized business model.

2. Shift away from so much 1-1 work into groups, programs, and seminars where you can teach and serve at the same time and get an income boost.

3. Shift into new ways of doing business and new ways of getting your message out more effectively by leveraging the internet and simple systems and support.

I’m on a mission to mentor more women to be financially successful and personally fulfilled. Stay tuned over the next few days and weeks for more details on exactly how I’m going to do that…..Jan

Over the past thirteen years, I have worked with hundreds of women entrepreneurs as their business coach. I’ve noticed that many women small business owners experience the same challenges in growing and running their businesses, such as feeling overwhelmed and isolated, having difficulty keeping focused, not enrolling enough support, and not planning for growth.

Here’s a summary of my best advice for any woman running a small business – my top seven tips for women entrepreneurs:

1) Focus on your strengths

There’s an old saying – ‘Do what you do best and delegate the rest.’ Know what your top strengths are. Delegate or drop anything that you’re not exceptionally skilled at, and focus at least 80% of your time using your key talents that bring you income.

2) Put yourself first

Your growing business needs a lot of time and attention. Many women in business put themselves third or fourth on their list of priorities. Put you and your business first and everything else will fall into place.

3) Learn to say ‘no’

I ask women who have started a business to drop anywhere from 25% to 50% of their time commitments when we start working together. Most women are too over-committed with non-business related activities. Be strategic about what you say yes to, especially in the first few years of your business. Guard your precious time as the valuable asset that it is.

4) Plan for success

Lack of planning causes more businesses to fail than anything else. Planning is very valuable because it causes you to think ahead to your vision and next steps to reach your goals. You can create a simple one page marketing plan that outlines your business objectives and how you will achieve them.

5) Ask for support

Don’t try to figure it all out by yourself. Notice where you are stuck and could use some help, and ask for it. Ask colleagues or others who have been in business and could mentor you, hire a business coach, or form your own mastermind support team.

6) Delegate or drop your weaknesses

Get clear on what you don’t enjoy doing or don’t do very well. Either stop trying to do it, or find someone who will do it for you. A perfect example is bookkeeping. If you dislike it, give it to someone else to do, and free up your time to earn money doing what you do well.

7) Keep an eye on the bottom line

You don’t need to have complex financial statements, but setting targets and tracking some key indicators every month will help you understand how you are doing. You’ll know sooner what’s working and what’s not working so that you can make strategic adjustments.

Implement at least three of these tips, and watch your business flourish!

I work with women to fulfill their purpose and potential through entrepreneurship. Yet many of these women lose sight of why they went business in the first place, and start to lose their passion and enthusiasm over time.

One client I’ll call Mary, came to be because she was at her wits end drowning in paperwork, emails, and to-do lists. She felt drained, overworked, and uninspired. She was in a place of not remembering why she had started her business in the first place or what she felt called to do.

Her reason for going into business was because she felt a strong call to make a contribution in the world. She didn’t know exactly how to do that in the way she imagined, so she just started with what she knew. This is where most women start, but they often get lost along the way.

By the time Mary came to me, she was exhausted, ready to give up, and had very limited financial resources remaining.

Here’s what I had her do to turn her situation around quickly – and you can to!

One: get clear on what you feel most called to do right now
It may be time to hone in on your true purpose and talents more narrowly. Get very specific on the exact value you bring to your clients and the key challenges you can help them solve.

Two: get support
Mary was running a one-woman show in trying to do everything herself. One of the first things we did was to get her some simple administrative support for a few hours a week.

Three: simplify and streamline
Look at your service and program offerings for the clients and the services you can let go of that are no longer a passion for you, for the things that take a lot of your time but don’t reward you financially, and for places where you have a long list of offerings but no clear specialty. Eliminate at least half of what you’re currently doing that no longer serves you so you can focus on the work that truly fulfills inspires you.

So what happened with my client Mary?

She immediately brought on an assistant for several hours a month which grew over time. She simplified by dropping one of her service offerings that didn’t bring a good financial reward, and completed with several clients who were draining her energy. She was then in a position to step into her greatness. Now she’s thriving and very happy and more fulfilled in her work.

Are you ready and willing to take your true place in the world and make the difference only you can make?

Most women are trying to do too much and consequently aren’t bringing their true contribution to the world. Stop playing small and start standing out for the work you feel called to do. Get clear on your true calling and core talents. Then, simplify, streamline, specialize, and get support so you can step into your fullest potential.

Wishing you much success and a great summer
Jan

PS: If it’s time for you to take your place in the world and you’d like the support of a qualified mentor to streamline, simplify, and step into your fullest potential, I’m booking a limited number of “Breakthrough Intensive VIP Consulting Days“. Click here to schedule a call with me to inquire about working together in a private day or half-day of consulting and mentoring to get on the fast track to more sales.

I received a review copy, and I was inspired reading Susan’s words.

In the book, Susan says that throughout history, women have struggled to change the workplace, change government, change society. So what’s next? It’s time for women to change the world! Whether on the job, in politics, or in their community, there has never been a better time for women to make a difference in the world.

Susan shows readers how to change the world through a series of inspiring case studies that chronicle how she and other pioneering women in a range of fields have done so in years past. Never before has the world so greatly needed the unique abilities of women to lead the way. But as history has shown, to make change, women must step into their power and become “women who count.”

Susan was the first female to work at Arthur Anderson & Co. and became the first female partner of the company’s consulting organization, Anderson Consulting (now known as Accenture), which is the world’s leading management consulting, technology services, and outsourcing organization. Susan has founded the The Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute for the Development of Women Leaders.

Being the powerful woman that she is, Susan decided to share her story in her book “Women Count” to inspire women around the world to become successful leaders much like herself. Susan feels it’s time for women to break that glass-ceiling and become women who count.

This is a Guest Post by Susan Bulkeley Butler of Tuczon, Arizona, Author of the new book “Women Count: A Guide to Changing the World”

Here’s what Susan has to say: “For All Women: Equality in Sight by 2020″

“Many believe that we, women, are equal, but the statistics speak for themselves.

The good news is:

We make, or influence, 85% of the household purchasing decisions

We are nearly 50% of the labor force

We are over 50% of the college graduates and high paying management positions

The United States is moving from a manufacturing to a knowledge-based economy, which should provide more jobs for women

When women are on senior leadership teams, the decisions are better, and they deliver more value to the bottom line of their companies

However:

Men still hold 83% of the senior leadership positions

Women are paid less than men (even in the same positions)

Men think of women as short-timers

Women must balance major household duties, raising children, and a career

As March was Women’s History Month, the accomplishments that women have been able to achieve over the past years certainly are a reason for celebration.

There were days when women were not expected to read, or go to school, and before August 26, 1920, we couldn’t even vote!

Thank you, pioneers, for paving the way for women.

Now, it’s our turn to make the world a better place for our daughters and granddaughters.

What does that mean? Start with:

A women president of the United States, and not just one, but many

Fair representation in the Congress – 50% women in the House of Representatives and Senate – and the state and local government positions

At least 30% women on boards of directors, senior leadership boards, and other high-level positions in our organizations

Young women graduating with the science, technology, and math skills necessary to help them secure the career positions of the future

Fathers and mothers proactively mentoring their daughters as fathers have done for their sons in the past

Equal salary for equal positions

By 2020, women will be everywhere.

This is a new world filled with opportunities for us to shape and change the world even more for the women who follow us.

The big questions is: do women really want to “dream big” and make these changes happen? It will take all of us to work together with men to change the world.

More women in leadership roles means new ways of approaching old problems, whether it’s how we deal with climate change, international relations, responsibilities of business, government, etc.

By dreaming big, beginning with the end in mind, creating terms, mentoring others, making and following plans, and navigating our way, we can do it!

We will be women who count. We will change the world.

Are you on board to make change happen?”

Susan founded her institute for women leaders as a ‘power center’ for resources related to women and leadership, serving as a clearinghouse for research, coaching and mentoring to develop leadership potential and helping women make bold changes to improve their lives.

How is your new year going so far? I’m getting back into the full swing of networking and events after some time off at the end of December.

You’ve heard me say that in order to grow your business and income to the next level and simplify your marketing, you really need an expertise or a specialty.

Many of the women I work with are very hesitant to say they are an expert at anything. I think it’s in our conditioning to not stand out and make a name for ourselves or to blow our own horn. As women, we try to blend in and be the same as everyone else. But, that strategy will never work to get ahead in business!

Are you one of the many talented women who has so much wisdom and experience to offer, yet lacks the clarity or the inclination to declare expert status? Or, do you have so many interests and abilities that you struggle to simplify your offer and stand out for your specialty?

If so, here’s a simple exercise to narrow down what you’re good at and position yourself to become well known for your expertise.

Write your answers to the following three statements:

Something I’m really passionate about and very interested in that I like to read and talk about a lot is . . .

If I was asked to speak to a group next week for an hour, the subject I know so well that I could speak about easily with little preparation is . . .

My favorite issues, situations or challenges I like to work on with my clients are . . .

Your answers will give you an indication of your passion, talents and expertise and the specific and unique way you like to help your clients.

Being an expert doesn’t mean you need to have degrees and certifications. That’s the old-style of expert. It just means that you really know your subject and care deeply about sharing what you know with other people to improve their lives.

Make the commitment to start reading, writing, and speaking more about what you know and love and you can develop authority status easily in less than a year. This will boost your confidence and will give people a way to get to know you and decide to work with you without you having to work so hard to attract more clients.

Just share your passion and wisdom everywhere you go and people will be attracted naturally to you and your message.

I invite you to share your comments and thoughts below.
Wishing you much success and joy in 2011!
Jan

I attended a breakfast meeting of the Women’s Executive Network in Toronto yesterday. WXN recently sent out a press release that they have grown to more than 16,000 members and are the largest community of influential, powerful and successful women in Canada and Ireland. Members are executive and professional women who are high achievers and want to connect with other women for networking and support.

I have recently partnered with WXN to facilitate their Wisdom Mentoring Program for women executives and entrepreneurs. I can’t wait to get started supporting these women to achieve higher levels of success and fulfillment.

Pamela Jeffery founded the organization and is an inspiring woman leader. This is a photo of me with Pamela at the meeting.

Yesterday’s meeting featured a panel of senior level women discussing crisis management within their organizations and suggestions on how to handle a crisis effectively.

Pamela recently launched a study to determine gender diversity on corporate boards. The results of her findings will be released next month at the meeting. I’m sure the findings will be controversial and will provoke much discussion.

Take this time to think about what type of support you want and need to grow yourself and your business. Watch for upcoming announcements about new programs I’ll be offering to support you in stepping up in a bigger way. And – let me know what type of support you need. I’d love to hear!

I listened today to the Inspiring Women Summit – a free virtual event with some of my favorite leaders designed to help women activate their full potential. It features daily dialogues between amazing women such as Marianne Williamson, Christiane Northrup, Sonia Choquette, Joan Borysenko, Marci Shimoff, and Riane Eisler and many other inspiring women leaders which then spark conversations between participants.

Women are at the core of the shift that is required. It is time for feminine values, wisdom, and virtues to take a fully equal role in creating a world that works for all. The goal is to empower each of us to liberate our gifts and take a stand for what we are co-creating.

Today, Marianne Williamson talked about how women need to step up and speak out about a new humanitarian economic model. We must take more of a leadership role. Yet, there are many internal and external challenges that stop women from saying what’s in their hearts. I really agree with her on that.

Riane Eisler spoke about a new economic model called “caring economics”. Women are 70% of the world’s poor. Women over 65 are twice as likely to be poor than men because they have been the caregivers. WE need a new model so women get more of the economic pie.

This Global Telesummit runs from May 1 to 8 and will put as many as women as possible into deep relationship with other inspiring women across the globe – all for FREE. You can participate live in as few or as many of the live calls as you like, and they are all taped so you can catch up with ones you miss.

If you miss any calls, you’ll get the replays. These calls are causing me to think bigger about my message of economic empowerment for women and how I can get it out there.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this telesummit.

The inspiration for today’s article came from a visit to my hairdresser. He gave me a ‘zigzag’ part, when for many years I had had a perfectly straight, linear part in my hair. With a simple flick of his comb, he expanded my concept of what a ‘part’ was, encouraging me into an out-of-the-box idea that I had never even considered.

I hope to inspire you to think out of the box – to step out of our typical linear thinking and think more creatively and innovatively.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

On a road trip I took one time called “Back Roads and Country Inns”, we drove down many back roads and winding country lanes, often not entirely sure where we would end up. The joy was in the exploration and the journey, not in arriving at the destination.

It struck me that we are often willing when on vacation to put the roadmap aside and just explore. We discover charming towns and hidden beauties as we just follow the road wherever it leads, enjoying the journey, living moment to moment.

This spirit of exploration made me think about how we typically limit ourselves in our lives. I wondered where else in my life I took the usual straight and narrow path when it would be more interesting – even more exciting – to follow the road less traveled and take a curious jog on a path I’ve never seen before. Where would it lead me?

In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, some of us forget that life is not a destination, a deadline, or a single event. Instead, it’s a complex, multi-faceted, organic organism, forever changing as new inputs stimulate its shape and character.

Most people act as if their lives follow a neat linear progression. But, in reality, there is no pre-determined pattern to our lives any more.

Just as there are no longer predictable stages to life, so too are there no longer predictable stages to a business. They follow a much more organic pattern, and it is almost impossible to predict what the actual results or outcomes will be.

Because our lives are constantly changing and evolving, we need to learn to improvise, to be comfortable with where change takes us. To let go of the ‘known’ and take the risk of exploring uncharted territory.

We can learn to ‘zigzag’ by charting our own path in life and business, our own individual course, while giving ourselves the gift of time to explore and enjoying the scenery along the way. Our life plan or our business plan will be shaped by these experiences, and we may end up somewhere we never expected to be – and loving it.

Ask yourself these questions:

Where in my life or my business do I most need to step off the linear, well-trodden path, be open to what’s right in front of me in the moment, and take a different course of action?

What could I try that I’ve never done before?

Where can I zigzag to reach my ultimate goal so that I enjoy the journey instead of just focusing on reaching the end result?

How could I innovate and step in a bold new direction?

Consider an out-of-the-box idea that you’ve never tried before. Take a more experimental, open-minded approach. Improvise, try something new, do something in a way you’ve never done it before. If that doesn’t work, try something else. Be open to learning something new. We learn more from our failures than we do from our successes, so be open to ‘failing’ – the surest route to innovation and creativity.

If you have a goal to change your business results, consider several different ways you could achieve the same outcome. In reality, it’s not the destination that is important. It’s getting there, and then starting off in another direction or down another road, relishing every moment of the journey.

Be open to stumbling upon where you’re going rather than mapping it out in advance. Notice which of the many opportunities that come your way really appeal to you most. Say yes to those good opportunities that tap into your passion but weren’t in your plan.

Take the more interesting path to reach your goals. Step off the well-trodden, predictable path and learn to zigzag. I assure you – you will be well rewarded!

I invite you to post your thoughts and comments below.

Wishing you much success,
Jan

History of Amazing Woman’s Day

The celebration of Amazing Woman’s Day was first conceived over a decade ago by transformational coach and author Marsh Engle. As the activities, programs and outreach of the Amazing Woman initiative has expanded over the years, the core mission remained the same: To serve as a unifying symbol of women everywhere who wish to bring a sense of value and purpose to their life, their community and the world. It was in March, 2001 that women throughout the United States first joined to establish the Amazing Woman’s Day movement. In 2002 the celebration grew to 50 U.S. cities. A United States Congressional Proclamation acknowledges Amazing Woman’s Day as a movement of inspiration among women, empowering entrepreneurship and creativity. Since that time, the Amazing Woman’s Day movement has served to inspire thousands across the United States and beyond. Additional celebration cities to join the movement this year include; Kingston, Jamaica; New York City, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; San Francisco, California, Los Angeles, California.

After I came back from Tuscany last September, I started the daily ritual of making myself a café au lait in a large bowl every morning. When I was in Italy, I would go down early to the breakfast area each day for my coffee. Some of us started using cereal bowls to drink our café au lait. There was always warm milk in a container as well as coffee on the table.

Slowly sipping my coffee with two hands from a bowl was a lovely way to start each day as I looked out over the vineyards and olive groves onto the surrounding fields and hillsides. It made me feel so calm and peaceful and connected to the beauty all around me.

When I came back home, I maintained the daily ritual of my morning café au lait. I have other rituals of course, such as stretching, meditating and journaling first thing in the morning.

What are the daily rituals that anchor your days?

The mundane rituals as well as the ones that give you the feeling of being connected to something larger than yourself? Those daily actions that connect you to both yourself and to the Universal Energy or to the Divine?

Rituals are a set of actions regularly repeated in a precise manner. Rituals can help us connect with who we really are at our core and guide us in our search for meaning and identity.

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to start – or restart – any rituals that give you a sense of calm, security, peace, connection, love or joy.

I’d love to hear what your daily rituals are!
