The Most Effective Way to Build Better Relationships with Clients

By Jan Marie Dore

The new trend in marketing is to be your most authentic self and really let your personality shine through. Your personality is the new secret ingredient in your marketing mix. Your clients want to know the real you. People want real connections with real people – especially now.

Business is all about building and maintaining personal connections with your clients that run deep because you take the time to nurture those relationships. And, the best way to build genuine relationships with your ideal clients is to be yourself.

That means sharing your opinions and taking a stand. It also means letting people in a little on your personal life, or being a little vulnerable by sharing what’s not working instead of always trying to be the expert. Your clients want to know you’re a real person.

People are more sceptical now of someone who appears “flawless”. Everyone is really tired of all the hype and inauthentic sales copy they have been inundated with and want to know they are dealing with a real, genuine person who has a personality, some flaws and a personal life outside of work.

If you’ve been hiding out by not bringing your full passion or full self into all you do, or having a vague message, or using a professional, lecture style tone in your messages, maybe it’s time to try putting more YOU into your marketing.

Let people know who you are and what you’re up to. Be authentic and speak directly to your readers as if you were speaking to one of your favorite clients.

By doing this, you’ll develop deeper, more personal connections with your clients. They’ll look to you long-term for advice and solutions, and you’ll get much more satisfaction from just being yourself.

Great article Jan. For sure I get pretty sick of the “big gurus” and their constant chatter. They pretend they know me by having my name in the subject line or in the first line of the note when I know that is a machine.

The challenge comes from needing to automate a lot of the messages and still remain personal in the note. I know we women can make it better.

You offer some really great courses.

  2. I agree Sue that we women can lead the way in bringing the personal touch back to marketing….Jan

  3. Thank you for touching on this. I provide outsourcing for small biz owners to work on their social media and we walk a fine line – you can’t outsource relationships. For my clients, though, they can get them started in a personal way by delegating.

My personal challenge is this – How much do I let hang out? I would love to share some of my frustrations or setbacks but I am worried that if I share them I will lose credibility with clients and prospects.

I’d love to know your take on this.

  4. Hi Nikki,
It’s fine to share frustrations or setbacks if you then go on to say how you handled it or what you learned that you now do differently. Share your experience as a teaching point to inspire others.

  5. Jan,

Your articles always deliver a clear and pertinent message. I found when I started doing my detox workshops in my office and also as a teleconference that people really related to my own experiences that I shared. From that point on, I found relating to my clients as a fellow traveler on the path to optimum health and wellness made them more accepting of the fact that when they make a slight detour, it doesn’t mean they should abandon the journey.

  6. Really enjoyed your “Building Better Relationships” blog. I am preparing for an interview on eWomenNetwork Radio, and was refreshing to read. Your comments are perfect in many ways for the relationship between my clients and what SendOutCards can do for them. Your comments reinforces my efforts to put my own personal touch on professional cards I send out to clients.

    Thank you,
