Getting Started Creating Information Products

By Jan Marie Dore

I’ve been teaching several classes recently to coaches and other service professionals about adding information products as a new revenue stream. I love connecting with women and supporting them in learning and implementing new ideas to grow their business.

Internet marketing comes naturally to me as I’ve been doing it for so long. I teach women service providers step-by-step how to create new profit centers in their business. I like to break it down into simple, doable steps to make it easy to implement.

My business changed dramatically when I added
new revenue streams and information products.

. . . my marketing became easier

. . . my income increased

. . . I made more sales when I went out to speak

I’d like to share with you some of the ideas I shared at my talk
on how you can get started with information products.

1) Find an unmet need and fill an existing demand.
You’ll have your best success selling information products by finding an unfilled need in your current marketplace and creating a product or program to meet that existing demand. It’s almost impossible to create demand that doesn’t already exist, but you can do very well providing the solutions, resources and answers that people are already searching for.

2) Repurpose everything you do.
You don’t have to start from scratch when creating a new information product. You more than likely have something on your computer from an article, a talk or a workshop that you could use and repurpose. For example, turn a series of articles into an ebook, record the ebook as an audio program, or package your seminar into a workbook you can sell. The ideas are endless.

3) Enroll support and assistance to complete your projects.
You need support and assistance to complete your projects. Don’t try to do it all alone. Keep your first project simple, and don’t get bogged down trying to learn new technology. If anything feels too technical, pick up the phone or send an email to someone you know who has already done this. Or, join a coaching program or hire a virtual assistant to get you set up and started quickly. There are many very reasonably priced services and programs available. This will give you momentum to complete your projects so you can start making sales sooner.

You can easily add a new profit center to your business by turning what you know into an information product, coaching program or seminar. This will make your marketing much easier, increase your sales, and have clients calling you instead of you having to chase after them.

I invite you to share your questions and comments below.

Wishing you much success,
Jan

  1. Hi there Jan, how timely this blog is! I spent all of yesterday and have earmarked today writing a keynote I am doing on ‘the 5 Steps Of Playing BIG in a Small Business’for an upcoming event I have been asked to speak at. It will become a CD by tomorrow afternoon and will be video’d on the day and become another product. My goal is to have a series of them… and so, it continues! Thanks and chat soon. B

  2. Your speech sounds great Bernadette! You’re doing it right by creating a series and using both audio and video.

  3. joette says:

i’ll be teaching how to use homeopathy at home in a 6 hour lecture next month to about 50 . i t will be audio recorded as partial payment for my work and it’s been offered that i can have it videoed for an additional cost. since i’[m one of many speakers over a 3 day conference, i’ll be one of several who will be packaged and sold in an audio package. i can certainly sell my audio separately as well as perhaps a video. i’m still contemplating the merit of doing both since the cost of the video may be quite costly.
any experienced input is welcome. thank you

  4. Definitely do audio Joette. You can sell the CDs. Video is more costly, but it connects with people better than audio – almost like you’re right there with them. Some commercial video companies charge a lot. It’s worth it if you know you can sell the DVDs. If you just go with audio for now, you could create your own online course with video using simple equipment.

  5. Hi Jan, I have a question for you …I met you at AWD earlier this Spring. If you remember, I facilitate 2-day Heal Your Life workshops (based on the philophies of Louise Hay) at a beautiful retreat in cottage country. We have had a lot of success, 100% positive feedback and are having another one coming up on Oct 23/24 and Nov 13/14.

Based on this success, what would you recommend with regard to branching out? I have been thinking of offering the course in Toronto and have starting looking for a venue there. do you have any idea where is a lovely, safe, unique venue (preferably Victorian B&B kinda thing with a touch of nature) … close to downtown TO and subway line … that can accommodate 10-12 people for a private workshop? Any ideas?

Or what other ideas would you recommend for me as I explore expansion opportunities?

    Thanx in advance, Jan!

  6. Hi Rhonda,
That’s great that you’re having such success! I don’t know of a Victorian B& B type location in Toronto – but it sounds like a great idea. Do you do any speaking to attract people to your workshops? That would be good to do in Toronto to attract people who live there.

For marketing purposes, you might also create a CD or booklet sharing your ideas that you could give to people or sell for a low price so they get a taste of what you offer.

    I hope that helps!
